case study risk assessment training ergonomics of picking, packing and posting employees, workers, contractors and agency staff legal case study we have a variety of speakers from various high profile organisations (including solicitors, trade unions, safety specialists and consultants) in this sector. they will offer information and advice on how to raise health and safety performance. the session will also include a question and answer session. to book a place click here healthy workplaces for all ages the next baohsf event is being organised in collaberation with enterprise europe network. it will be held at city hall in bradford on 24th october 2017, to coincide with the european week for safety and health. by 2030, workers aged over 55 are expected to make up 30 % or more of the total workforce in many european countries. this creates challenges for employees, employers and businesses. in light of an ageing population and declining demographics, it is vital to create safe and healthy conditions for all workers throughout their working life. doing so ensures our workforce is sustainable and dynamic. organisations of all sizes and sectors, public or private, as well as individuals, are welcome to to join us for inspirational case studies from the public & private sector, sharing good practice and facts & figures from national bodies. for further information and to book your place please click here. corporate manslaughter update the corporate manslaughter and corporate homicide act 2007 was introduced as a result of several cases (in particular the prosecution of townsend thoresen following the sinking of the herald of free enterprise which resulted in 193 deaths). under the principle of the ‘identification doctrine’ it was proving difficult to find a ‘controlling mind’ within organisations responsible for the sequence of events or circumstances that led to an accident resulting in fatalities. the ‘new’ act allows an organisation, rather than an individual to be prosecuted for one of the most serious of crimes, manslaughter. obviously, an organisation cannot serve a custodial sentence – but as described below, the fines are in the order of £100s of 1000s. if an individual is found to be responsible they can still be prosecuted for manslaughter by gross negligence. it is fair to say that the number of prosecutions for corporate manslaughter was not as high as some had first thought in the years following the introduction of the legislation in 2007. however, momentum is growing and the cps is using this sanction with increasing frequency (despite the numbers of fatalities at work initially dropping then remaining fairly stable since 2008/9). the graph below clearly illustrates the increase in the number of convictions over the last five years: the level of fines handed out by the courts is also growing in these cases as shown below: this increase in both frequency of prosecution and level of fine, together with the new sentencing guidelines which are also resulting in much higher levels of fine across the board for health and safety offences, sends out a clear message. all organisations need to sit up and take notice – if health and safety is not high up your agenda not only are you risking: your employees (and others) health and safety your reputation you may well also be exposing your organisation to a huge financial risk. adam varley, occupational safety adviser further information: http://www
